Privacy
In breve
Gianmarco Cherubini, sviluppatore indipendente, Italia.

Privacy
This policy covers Mangadana, the manga and comics reader: the iPhone and iPad app, the Android app, the website www.manga-dana.com and the web app on it.
In short
Mangadana has no accounts and no server that receives your files. It uses no advertising or tracking, and the developer collects no analytics. The volumes you import, covers, bookmarks and settings stay on your device, and the developer receives none of this data. Only in the Android app, and only if you use translation, the Google library that reads and translates the balloons sends Google technical diagnostics (see below).
Who is responsible
Gianmarco Cherubini, independent developer, Italy. For any question: support@manga-dana.com.
What stays on your device
- The files you import (CBZ, CBR, CBT, PDF, EPUB) are copied into the app’s storage on the device and read from there, offline too.
- Titles, collections, covers, bookmarks and settings are kept in the same storage.
- Super-resolution (HD and 4K) is computed on the device, on its GPU, Neural Engine or NPU: pages are never sent anywhere.
- Comic translation (experimental, in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps) happens on the device. In the iPhone and iPad app the text of the balloons is read with models included in the app and translated with Apple’s on-device translation; the first time, iOS may ask you to download the translation languages from Apple. In the Android app Japanese is read with models the app downloads from Google Play the first time you use translation, Korean, Chinese and English with Google’s ML Kit on the device, and the text is translated on the device with ML Kit, which downloads the languages from Google the first time. Neither the pages nor the text are sent anywhere, unless you choose an online translator (see below). The text read and translated, and your list of names and terms, are kept in the app’s storage, so pages already translated open at once.
- Passwords of protected archives: the iPhone and iPad app saves them in the keychain, on that device only (they go into neither backups nor iCloud); the Android app encrypts them with an Android Keystore key that never leaves the device; the web app keeps them in memory only and forgets them when it closes.
- Volumes are left out of the iCloud backup, in the iPhone and iPad app, and out of Google’s, in the Android app, which backs up none of its data: they can always be imported again.
- The library backup is a file you create and save wherever you like; it does not contain the volumes.
Connections you start
Some features, if you use them, connect to third-party services directly from your device, without cookies. Each service receives only what the request needs, plus the IP address that any connection involves.
- The Internet Archive catalogue, in the apps and the web app: when you browse, search or download, the requests go to Internet Archive. In the web app the same applies to the sites you add as catalogues.
- Your servers, in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps: when you add an OPDS catalogue (Kavita, Komga or Calibre-Web, for example), the requests go only to the address you wrote, with the username and password you gave. The password stays on the device, like the archives’ passwords, and is not included in backups. Covers and files the catalogue links to may be on other sites: the account is never sent there. The demo catalogue is on this website and links to Internet Archive. The developer receives nothing.
- Cover search, in the web app only and after you agree: the volume title is sent to Open Library (Internet Archive) and AniList; Open Library images go through the wsrv.nl service (images.weserv.nl).
- Collection icons, in the web app only: the text you search for is sent to Iconify.
- Online translator, in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps, if you choose it and after you agree to the service named: the texts read in the balloons, with your list of names and terms, go to the service you chose (OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic, OpenRouter, DeepL or an address you write), with your key and under the terms of your account with that service. Pages are never sent and the developer receives nothing. The key stays on the device, like the passwords, and is not included in backups. Going back to the on-device translator withdraws your consent.
- ML Kit diagnostics, in the Android app, when you use translation: ML Kit, the Google library that reads and translates the balloons on the device, sends Google technical diagnostics and usage data (the device’s manufacturer, model and system, the app’s version, device and installation identifiers, timings, errors, the languages chosen), encrypted in transit. It does not send the pages or the texts. Google uses them for ML Kit’s diagnostics and usage statistics and does not pass them on to third parties; the developer does not receive them.
Each has its own policy: Internet Archive and Open Library, AniList, wsrv.nl, Iconify, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, OpenRouter, DeepL.
The website, the App Store and Google Play
The website and the web app are hosted by Vercel Inc. When you open www.manga-dana.com, Vercel processes the technical data needed to deliver the pages and protect the service, such as your IP address, under its privacy notice. The website uses no cookies and no analytics.
The iPhone and iPad app is downloaded from the App Store. If you chose to share analytics with app developers in the device’s settings, Apple may give the developer aggregated statistics and crash reports, which do not say who uses the app. TestFlight testers can send feedback and reports, which reach the developer through Apple.
The Android app is downloaded from Google Play, which also installs the parts suited to your device and, when they are needed, translation’s models. If you chose to share usage and diagnostics data with Google, Google may give the developer aggregated statistics and crash reports, which do not say who uses the app. Testers of a Google Play test can send feedback, which reaches the developer through Google.
Purchases
Mangadana Premium, a monthly subscription or a one-time purchase, is bought in the app through the App Store or Google Play: Apple or Google handles the payment, and the developer receives neither your payment details nor your Apple ID or Google Account. The app checks on the device whether the purchase or the subscription is active. You manage or cancel the subscription in your Apple ID settings or, on Android, in Google Play, under Payments & subscriptions.
